I am a 4-string tenor player that picked up a 5-string banjo. I would like to learn how to play it, but more importantly, is there a video or cheat sheet where I can learn the song THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE quickly? Do you stick with one picking pattern if playing backup - that's another question. Thank you

Hi ,, what level of playing are you at? Are you fairly fluent with 3 finger picking? What key do you want to play it in? Do you have a video or sound clip of your playing? I can whip up an arrangement but I need to know these things first.

There's an arrangement here on the Hangout that might be of help. The first part is fairly easy and is all in the lower 5 strings, the second part goes up the neck and it might be a little more difficult if you're fairly new to banjo. Go here: banjohangout.org/tab/browse.as...l&v=17481. You'll have to have Tabledit or TefView to play it. TefView is free and can be found here: tabledit.com/tefview/index.shtml.

As far as backup, you can stick with one pattern or vary your backup. Try vamps, rolls, slides anything that fits in with the song.

Chuckv97 - I can fingerpick okay, and for the 5-string, I just need to learn and remember the chord shapes, as they are different from the 4-string tenor. So right now, I am doing forward roll, and backwards roll with three chords G, C, D7 just trying to get both hands coordinated.
Thanks.

Thanks!  I downloaded the free tab viewer and will try and look that over.

banjo poet,
I play a simple 3 chord version of This little Light that would be great for "sing a long "style playing. No tab needed if you know the tune. I just move between the 3 chords while picking through any picking pattern. Or you could strum the 3 chords. The 3 chords I use are even easier than in G, and sound more upbeat to me. And you should learn them anyway.
Chords are E, A, and B. The Root chord E is 3 fingers on the first and second frets.(same as a 3 finger C chord except you move your forefinger from 2nd string first fret to 3rd string first fret). A is a barre chord on the second fret which you slide up to the 4th fret for a Barre B. To make it even easier, when you move from E to A, you don't move your left hand off the neck, just collapse your middle finger down onto that second fret for A.

The first line "This little........let it shine." is all E
The second line "This little..... let it shine is all A until "shine" which is E.
The last line Let(E) it (A) shine(E), all the(A) time(E), let it(B) shine(E)

Have fun with it,
Dave

Hi Chuck,

Thank you for the tab, I'm going to give this a go. I'm also trying two finger thumb lead as well. How easy, if at all, could your tab be arranged for two finger thumb lead?

Regards

GS

You're welcome, GS.  If you substitute the 2 consecutive forward rolls in my tab with 3 thumb-index notes you should be able to do it with 2-finger thumb-lead.

I'll give that a go, Chuck. Thanks for your reply.
