I’d like to change the peghead overlay on one of my banjos , has anybody done this or sent one out to a luthier? I’m curious to the cost .
Thanks

It would take a seriously good reason for me to change a peghead overlay. Yes, I've done it (ruined overlay had to be replaced), but it way too much work for cosmetic reasons. The old one must be removed (heat to release glue, or saw it off, or grind it off). New one must be made and installed, new one has to be profiled to the peghead, finish and probably color must be touched up... lot of work and/or expense.
Why do you want it changed?

Purley cosmetic
Reasons , I was thinking the same either heating to soften the glue then prying it off , clean up by sanding, or cutting it off with a band saw .
Thanks

If you saw it off make sure the trussrod end is lower than the bottom of the veneer. They usually are but I've seen several that weren't. Would play the devil on the bandsaw blade.

If you post a picture, the people here might suggest another option. I am no luthier but with woodworking in general, sometimes a "mistake" can be turned into a "feature".

I’ve removed 2 recently, and both overlays suffered water damage, but pearl inlays were fine. Old free steam iron, vinegar and water mix, work something in between the overlay and neck to get it lifting. I use razor blades for most everything . Tap them with a little hammer lightly to lever the blade or drive deeper once your glue starts to turn loose. The vinegar might be no help, haven’t tried with just plain water. I suspect my overlay water damage is due to impatience.

Thanks Brett
Your confirming one way to approach this , I was thinking your way and if it didn’t work, it could be sawn off and flattened for the new overlay.
