Hi, looking for a bit of advice.
Am going to try building my first banjo (which will be a mountain banjo). Currently I'm in the process of getting everything that I need for the build so I can start it over my Christmas and New Year break.
I've picked up a 6" Remo head but not sure how to secure it into the body?
All the builds and plans I've seen are using skin heads which are tacked in and have metal rings wedged in between the front and back body parts to create the tension on the head.
Would this work on a Remo head or is there a better way of doing it?
Thanks of any advice any can give me
If you look on my BHO page you'll find some pictures of my first build , also a mountain banjo. This one used a skin head (cat) like you said. to use a plastic head you can probably build it the same way but you may have to experiment with the length of the "tin can" part in order to get the tension you want. I have seen some put adjustment (tensioning) screws in the back to set the head tension.

What thickness of metal did you use?
Also was it a sheet that you've bent yourself, or was it already a ring?

I had thought about that, but decided that I wanted all the fixings to be internal for this first build
That was over 10 years ago but if you magnify the picture you can see that it is screwed or rivited together and has some tape over the jointed area. I'm sure it was just a piece of sheet metal I had laying around. A coffee can would work nicely . you could cut and rejoin if necessary, even joining two cans if need be. that would give you a nice pre-formed edge to go against the head material.quote:
