I have a virtually brand new 12” Pisgah Wonder banjo coming my way. I’ve never played one but quite a few of my friends claim they don’t like the necks ? Too thick ? Not sure what that means.

^^ good question to pose to your friends when you next meet up.  devil

Fwiw, after playing it for a minute or so, an accomplished player said that the neck of my wideneck GoldTone "feels really nice."  His experience tells me he surely must have realized it was a wideneck, but I didn't probe any further.

Curiously, even hand size seems to correlate only weakly with neck preference. Anecdotally, I personally know two makers of VERY highly regarded banjos, who are both very large, who build and play themselves necks at the opposite ends of the range.

Not sure either. I like their necks, they sell a lot of them, and really good players use them.

That’s what I thought as well.

I find it's not that difficult to get used to a new neck. Your hand and brain adapts fairly well to these things.

I have a Pisgah Dobson and it feels fine to me. I have a medium size hand.

I have a neck carve that I prefer -- a shallow D -- but I have only one banjo with that shape. My others have larger, less shallow shapes but it's not too hard to adjust, and I don't have big hands.

My 12” standard-scale custom black walnut Pisgah banjo is 4 years old and I love it. Play it almost every day. Planning to place another Pisgah order soon. Will get a 11” short-scale cherry banjo with a persimmon fret board.

I agree.  My situation sounds close to yours.

Not sure what they mean by that statement, I love my Pisgah Woodchuck 12 inch pot banjo.

I have sold my Enoch Tradesman awhile back and either I will custom order a Pisgah or a Rickard banjo .
I like Pisgah's business model , an American made banjo , local woods and Steve owner of Acoustic Music Works here in Pittsburgh
told me awhile back that the owner was up north in Pa sourcing some wood , Steve is a dealer for Pisgah . Rickard is from Canada still North America but I think I will custom order from Pisgah's web page where you can order your banjo with want you want . Get a lot of banjo for the money .

Rickard has a custom program as well, and in my opinion represents a better value than Pisgah's offerings. Certainly worth an email to Rickard to get a quote if you're dropping $2K+ on a new instrument.

I love the sound of Rickard's banjos and you probably get more banjo for your money and I believe he uses or makes his own hardware including fantastic tuners but I see on Pisgha's site they also have custom made hardware also . I like the idea of using a wood persimmon tone ring which will give you that darker plunk sound verses a metal tone ring but I am sure Rickard could do a wood ring .  I am a traditionalist and at my age I want an all wood fret board and I do not like the Richlite and synthetic boards and Pisgha only offers  a persimmon fret board , but I could live with it . I do like Pisgha's  sustainability philosophy .
