Good news is you got a great deal on a great banjo; bad news is you won't be able to blame the instrument. Best of luck on your journey!

Sitting here looking at the Snuffy Smith compensated third string bridge on my Gibson parts banjo, Snuffy's Superman S maker's mark is facing the neck. I know this has to be correct because the compensating notch for the third string also faces the neck -- as it must in order to do its job of lengthening the string. In this orientation, the vertical/90-degree side faces the tailpiece. The sloped side faces the neck.

Maybe some makers used to put their marks on the back side. But all the marked bridges I have work best with their marks facing the neck.

All I'm saying is that I'm 99.9999% sure that I read that advice on BHO; not implying in any way that that that advice was correct.

I just got a new Gold Tone banjo set up from Gold Tone, staked, with a Snuffy Smith bridge and a Presto tailpiece. The logo on the Snuffy Smith is pointing toward the fretboard. I am assuming Gold Tone knows what they are doing here though.
