At a jam yesterday, another guy mentioned to me, "one step dance timing."

In spite of never having heard of such a thing, apparently that's the timing/tempo/?? I was playing (?) in.

So, I finally got around to doing a brief/cursory Google search.  From the sites that popped up, I see that it's:

  a) " ... 4/4 time (fast slow or anything in between),"

  b) " ... fairly rapid 3/4 or 3/8 time,"

  c) " ... an easy walking dance," and

  d) " ... a ballroom dance in 2/4 time."

Though I don't much "understand" time signatures, I can regurgitate a definition.

I'm not looking for any explanations [particularly if they're non-KISS], but can all those ^^ be accurate?

Sounds like it don’t mean a thing , as the Duke said. Tempo and time signatures are 2 different things, although 2/4 time usually is of a faster tempo.

Have no idea what the guy at jam meant by "one-step dance timing".

I would say doesn't mean nor define anything really musical/rhythm terms.

But "one-step" does mean something as far dance... is essentially literally describes the feet, just evenly one step smoothly forward per beat, on the beat, without really any further feel of accent or grouping/division or pattern.  As some had originally described one-step as not dancing... as it is basic, bit like just walking step; no fancy steps to know. If you can walk, you can dance a one-step. Somewhat contrasting what it isn't, that is in comparison to other "real" dancing wink; two-step, waltz, foxtrot, Lindy... or other fancier/complex footwork, or varied uneven steps and rhythm (slow slow quick quick type thing).

With that simple just constant even beat oriented, doesn't depend on any specific meter or rhythm, just steady beat... so it is fairly adaptable to various music meter (number of beats and division); rhythms; and wide range of tempo.

although 2/4 time usually is of a faster tempo.

Naw, not how it works.

Heck, armed with that ^^, had my feet and knees not given out, I probably could have learned to do the one-step.  yes   [In a previous incarnation I could do a better-than-decent polka, but those ^^ others were 'way beyond me.]

Interestingly... or maybe not ... the guy pointing out the tempo (?) of my playing to me was the same guy that, a year or two back, chastised dancers for not dancing the music he was playing [i.e. they were waltzing when he thought they should be foxtrotting or two-stepping, or t'other way around, or ???].

Here's what I found when I did a Google search on "one step dance definition".  I think the fellow was referring to 2/4 time.

This is a bit out of sync w/ the post but this type of dancing , maybe timing , reminds me of the church members that stomp their feet to a type of chanting while sitting in church which to me is quite interesting .
