Since getting the shower stall put in cost me $$ five grand, and I just sold my Bart Reiter banjo & case, I figured I should take the big box the stall came in, and make a sort of banjo-shaped box to ship it in.

Padded the inside of the case, of course.
And I sort of remember somebody (Helix, maybe) suggesting that leaving the HANDLE exposed just might cause the people who move the packages to KNOW what a handle is for, and not just FLING it.

And I know that the UPS people don't much care if the package is UGG-OH-LEE, as long as it's taped up good.

Several years ago, a young man needed cash and sold me a mountain banjo he had. He shipped it via USPS, and it arrived in perfect shape. The "packaging" made it clear what it was, and somehow that earned the respect and care of the people who handled it along the way. They are people and not gorillas, after all -- or at least mostly so. The padding inside was a couple of old flannel shirts, which I still occasionally wear.

I think this thread & its participants have, by serendipity, stumbled upon something that should be in the BHO sticky about shipping. It struck me that forming a box in the shape of the instrument just might garner a little bit more respect & care by handlers, (as David P suggests). Psychologically there may be a different level of care between an anonymous square or rectangular box & an instrument shaped box. I think I first encountered this shipping method through the posts by Helix.

Maybe just put a "HAZARDOUS MATERIAL" sticker on the box might work. Truth in advertising, you know. banjered

I bought a rather expensive guitar and paid extra to have extra padding in and outside the case and plced inside a box. UPS came walking up my sidewalk with a guitar case with a tag slapped on the outside of it. Two of the latches were not fastened. It had two tuning pegs broken and everything else was OK. I was lucky. And just lost my extra money I paid the seller.
