As a kid, our oldest daughter* took Ukrainian dance lessons for a few years.   At one of the club's recitals [NOT a competition, so I guess we don't have to feel any shame] one of the Ukrainian grandpas asked which of my wife and I [both of British ancestry so far as I know] were Ukrainian.   I didn't delve into it, but I assume the b-i-g majority had family lineage.   Should it have mattered?

* The same one, who as a pre-schooler,  accompanied me on some excursion or other [maybe to check out a piece of machinery] .... we passed by this lady on our way through Canora, SK.

Attractions - Town of Canora

Once home our duaghter announced that when she grew up she wanted to be an "O-kainian lady."

And before my lovely and talented assistant was my lovely and talented assistant, her parents [Irish and English, fwiw] enrolled her and her sister in Highland dance classes.   Today, out of concern for cultural appropriation I asked if they had gone in competitions.  She said, "Well, we went to Pugwash.... the Highland Games.... ." Me: "But was it a competition?"  LATA: "Well, ya, I guess; but we weren't any good."   So tonight I guess I can sleep with a clear conscience.  wink

Edit: Ooops ... posted ^^ without realizing more had been added to the previous page ... will now go back and skim through it.  wink

This popped up on my Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1868117610770064.  I didn't notice any Metis fiddling, but I see lots of cultural appropriation  wink  ... a guy dressed up as a gorilla, a couple of Egyptian (?) pharoahs, a jailbird, etc., etc.

About 55ish years ago I used to "check things out" at the Bowsman Hotel once in a while, so naturally (?) it interested me.

Encountered a one-handed fiddler .... not at the hotel, but in the area.  He'd get somebody to tie his bow to his stump with a handkerchief ... dunno if he played in the Metis style, but Bob was everybody's uncle.  yes   RIP D.M.
