I'm thinking of buying a metal filing cabinet, removing the shelves, and storing my banjos inside in an upright position. My aim is just to keep things tidy (and it is lockable). My plan is to open up once a week, and select a banjo for use that week.
My question is, might a metal cabinet create a refrigerator effect that could stress the instruments (they would still be in their plywood cases)? Could there be condensation issues because of a lack of air circulating?
I could purchase a similar cabinet in chipboard, but feel the hinges would likely chew away from the chipboard - so not so attracted to that.
If I started looking for a suitable cabinet in hard wood (dimensions: 120 X 100 X 50 cm). It would be hard to come by and too expensive.
Any thoughts?

Perhaps you could drill some holes in the door, and/or, sides of the cabinet. I don't think there would be much of a problem if you didn't but not beimg familiar with humidity in the UK, you'd best be the judge of that.

Perhaps you could find an old attractive solid-wood cupboard. But it seems redudant to me. Why not build a a glass-fronted showcase cabinet?
I keep my banjos stored in their cases in closets in various bedrooms. Don't overthink the problem and its possible solutions.

Thanks guys.
I like the idea of an open front with maybe glass. I just want to keep them together and keep the dust off where I can. It's not a bad quest and there is no rush. They all sit behind a door space as it is.

Just out of interest, what are the dimensions of that rack please, Owen? Maybe I could put some kind of roof on it!
Cheers,
Peter

Peter, I think your initial idea was the best one. In the United States, we call it a storage cabinet. You can get them made from metal, plastic, or veneered particle board. Any of the above would be fine for what you are suggesting. Since it's not going to be moved around, there is no need to spring for an expensive option like a vault. Shop around and see what you can find within your budget.

.... dunno... I just took a pic off the internet for illustration.  My banjo cases measure about 6" thick, so IF  I was making one ... 7.5" per case??  [And IMNSHumbleO plywood beats chipboard seven ways from Sunday ....  IF chipboard can't be avoided, bolts are better than screws.]

Edit: Here's my "display case" complete with towel to prevent damage to wall .... so take my advice under advisement. wink

You may want to consider adding Govee or SensorPush wireless humidity and temperature monitors (with or without humidity control packs).
