This was written as a kind of “torch” song but I never got around to writing lyrics. Probably because I don’t sing.

That's funny! I often have a movie in my head when I'm writing these things. Boy meets girl. Bad communication kills romance. Boy goes off the deep end.
Thanks for the comment!

I think that Banjo when is played alone, in a relaxed way, is the best instrument in the world!
Thanks Paolo! It feels rather vulnerable playing a ballad on solo banjo but it's spirit is revealed not by what it can do, but what it can't do.

When it comes to "what it can't do," I've yet to discover any limitation. I've come to see the banjo as a "can do" instrument: a potent time-machine, capable of dipping a long-stemmed ladle into the soul. The banjo (in any variation) can be a deeply soulful instrument when tapped for that capacity. This piece also has that aspect and sent my mind wandering off into the past as I listened to its teleporting message. A number of your performances share that dimension, Laurence. Bela Fleck's "Sunset Road" and "After The Storm" also come to mind in this same vein.
I just meant that it doesn't have the range of a piano or the sustain of a violin - those kind of limitations. As to whether you can play any kind of music on it, I think that is self evident. But even given that, the banjo has more natural affinity in some areas than others. And indeed, sometimes the limiting factor is the player, not the instrument.
