Are there any guidelines on how far apart the tacks should be, how far from they should be down from the head on a skinhead banjo, and long they should be?

As a simple guideline: a little less than a thumb width apart, a little less than a thumb width down from the top, and not so long as to pierce all the way through to the inside.
