A chap called today bringing his Washburn B-10 banjo he bought new in the early 80's. It originally a 5 string but he shaved the neck down to make it a plectrum. The original head finally burst after much playing. Of course I thought it required an11" HC head, but no. Luckily I had a MC one which worked. He liked the head super tight. He had about 0.5mm gap between the bottom of the band to the cut out of the heel. He went away happy. As you can see, the crown height is approx 1/4" and this is after about 40 years of playing. Has anyone see this before on older heads?
