That's the more formal name for one of these:

Just in case you need a Big Word for Scrabble, or some such.

Interesting. Wikipedia says that it may be named after the athlete Jim Thorpe.

It'll always be a pound sign to me, regardless of how many other "handles" it has.

My grade 11 typing teacher called it a 'crosshatch'. He knew we were not eloquent enough to say 'octothorp',

Don your timing is impeccable, only a couple of days ago, my wife was laughing at a 'memory' that came up on her facebook feed today.  My son aged 7 at the time told his mum that because the weather was bad, his sister would be running on the apostrophe at school today.  After being questioned he was adamant she would be on the apostrophe because the grass would be too wet.

..... ahh - ''do you mean the AstroTurf son?'' .... ''yes mum, the apostrophe''

Nah. That's one of these. £ Though they are both shifted-3 on our respective keyboards.

When I was learning to ride a bicycle my parents drilled into me that pedestrians had the right of way.  So every time I encountered one I went around them and silently said to myself, "Presbyterians have the right of way."  yes

.... and for those of us that don't, it's "yes number."  As in  Hwy. #3.   IIRC, "number" is the one I learned first [i.e. 'w-a-y before lb. and sharp], so number it is!!  wink

The sharp was developed on its own and has angled up lines so that they’re not obscured by the lines of the staff

.... and if by accident  they're placed horizontally rather than slanted, I suppose it would be an accidental.

Would be fascinating to know when it was first used,  since Brahms and Beethoven probably used it, century or so before the late great Mr. Thorpe was born.

Wonder when it was first called "octothorpe".

Anybody want to take the time to photoshop Mr. Thorpe's FACE onto the BODY  of Spiderman supervillan Doctor Octopus?

I would, but it's been a busy day, and I need a NAP!

I tried to play banjo as neat and crisp as Scruggs, but my teacher said it sounded more Flattulent.
