With Jethro Burns and his BIL Chet,, Johnny Gimble, Floyd Cramer (doing his “pulloffs” on the ivories), Danny Davis, Boots Randolph, Roy Clark flatpicking a nylon string guitar (gasp!), and the Hee Haw band with Bobby Thompson, Charlie McCoy, & others.

When Jethro and Chet were staff musicians at WLW radio in Cincinnati in the Forties, they married twin sisters from New Richmond, Ohio. Their wives were singers who performed as the Johnson Sisters. I suspect that some pretty good music got played around the fireplace after Thanksgiving dinner at Atkins and Burns households.

Thanks so much for posting that! I found the arrangement a bit schmaltzy for my taste, but even so...

...Was there ever a guitarist as smooth and inventive as Chet Atkins?

I once read in an interview with Chet that he had to figure out ways to extend a 30 second tune into 2+ minutes, so he came up with inventive variations on the theme, so to speak. Arpeggios double-timed, playing sixths, thirds, block chords, etc. Some of it sounds schmaltzy and dated now, but at the time it was jaw-dropping. Jerry Reed said that Chet had ice in his veins - he’d go out on the Opry stage , live radio, and play some of the most difficult guitar stuff.

Chet always played with an eye to what would go over commercially - so nothing too “weird”. And he never played anything he couldn’t execute well. He played at maybe 90% of his ability, like the good studio player that he was. That would probably equal 200% of the ability for most of us.smiley

Jerry Reed was no slouch himself, same with early Glen Campbell.
