Darned well should be. Far as I'm concerned, they were THE southern rock band.

I might list Skynard at #2, except I don't think I can ever forgive them for "Free Bird." So I'll sub in Molly Hatchet.

The Allman Brothers Band created the genre and then transcended it, taking it somewhere new. Perhaps the greatest American rock band ever, playing "fusion" before anyone even knew what that was. There has never been a band with the likes of Dickey and Duane, two superstar guitar players who didn't have an ego clash but rather delighted in hearing the other play.
I always thought that Marshall Tucker Band epitomized Southern Rock.

There were definitely a lot of imitators (still are) but I think you got the top two for sure with Allman Bros and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Lynyrd Skynyrd basically played from a piece of sheet music that they wrote, that ain’t any kind of rock!
