Bought a 4 string tenor off the internet for roughly £250 (new), and have restrung it with D'Addario Irish Strings and tuned it GDAE, but I have noticed that the low G-string sometimes (quite frequently) pops out of the bridge, and it is rather annoying and results in me having to re-tune the banjo. Is this a normal-occurence, or is it rather a defect?

Thanks

That slot in the bridge needs to be a bit wider. Your G string is a lot stouter than the C that slot was made to fit.

Or deeper is needed. A folded piece of sandpaper should do the trick There is more tension on the fourth and first string to pop back toward the middle so they need to be a tad deeper. Angle the slot so it drops slightly toward the tailpiece. banjered

new banjo bridges are not too expensive [stu-mac, etc] buy a couple if you want to keep your present banjo 100%a orig. if you screw one up you are still OK- And some brands of ITB strings vary greatly in size and Guage. If you don't like the ones you have and want to expand your ITB choices extra bridges are a good thing.

That's not a great set of strings for most tenor banjos. Let us know your scale length and I can recommend gauges for you. Also, the cut off piece of the string is the perfect file for the slot.
