Always loved that line and finally I looked up the song's composer: fascinating story! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Henning

Actually it's "the FIRST thing you know old Jed's a millionaire".

That phrase reminds me of a cute little riddle.

Q. What's the first thing you know?

A. Um, uh, er...

Questioner interrupts with: Old Jed's a millionaire...

Per the Minneapolis Fed inflation calculator that 1962 $1m would be worth $10.4m today. Sounds better, but it woldn’t buy any more.

Another factoid: The reason Jerry Scroggins sang the lead is because the show had not yet sold to the network. With Flatt & Scruggs on the road all the time, it would have been difficult to get Lester to sing new lyrics in case the show got a sponsor whose name might be used in the show’s theme.
Scroggins lived in town & was readily available. He also used to be part of Gene Autry’s band on the Melody Ranch radio program.

Good factoid! Thanks!
