I use this tune to introduce waltz (3/4) time to my students since everyone knows the melody. Works very well.

I won a nickel bet with a good friend long ago as to whether Otis Redding ever recorded Down in the Valley.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z3DEUhmt4M is a dynamite version, albeit very far from the standard.  I often play it on fretless cigar box guitar.
