I was given an older model (BD-12) Ryobi drill press by a friend. Then only thing wrong with it was a broken return spring. The end in the centre of the spiral had broken off and thus wasn't long enough to work. I have exhausted all avenues here for finding a replacement due to its age. I was thinking trying to repair it be heating then bending the end down so its straight.

I have a butane gas cylinder that I can use for heating and will build an insulated jig to hold it while working on it. Once I have completed the reforming, what is the procedure for cooling it? Do I let it air cool or use oil or something else?

Me guess..
Have a bucket of cold water near by..
Drop it in as soon as it is bent..

Test it...
If it did not work...
Then..heat the newly formed bend.n drop it in the clod water..quickly..

Slow cooling wil make it softer quick makes it harder..

Hope this helps n good luck..
It is fun to make things work again.. ;0)

Got an old lawn mower hanging around? Rip/take off the starter cord and cover and see if that return spring will be a good replacement.

Will the butane torch heat it to redhot, or would you need a bottle mapp gas?

May want to cool/quench in oil (to avoid brittleness), dirty old motor oil. Watch out for flame up if you quench in oil, though. Brad
