So, I've noticed recently that a lot of young folks begin all of their spoken and written sentences with the word "so". So, is this a new grammatical technique that's being taught in our schools, or is it just a temporary conjunctionitis pandemic?

General complexity, lushness and accuracy of English has been going downhill for decades.

"You should..."

Stop telling me what to do! Although I used to work with an adult who often said the same.

In other words, like, you know ..... those phrases still irritate me.

Seems like, you know, some people like, can't, you know, write or speak, you know, like, a complete sentence without using those words.

So..... guess this is the next one that will become obnoxious quickly!

Seriously, there should be words and phrases that are erased from one's mind and never spoken/written/text, etc. when trying to communicate with others.

I believe "so" is only used in excess in Kentucky.

Athletes being interviewed, esp. hockey players, constantly feel they have to insert “obviously” in every other sentence.

That's because they're "...giving it 110%."

I used to work with an electrical engineer who started every other sentence with the word "basically".

Another electrical engineer from our facility in Hungary spent a year working in our US facility. Part of his challenge was to improve his command of the English language. During his stay in the US, he was mentored by our engineer with the affinity for the word "basically". When he returned to Hungary, his English language skills were greatly improved, but he also learned to start all of his sentences with the word "basically".

Thing is over here we have to listen to people over there use the word gotten which is the word equivalent of dragging fingernails down a blackboard/chalkboard. We dropped it centuries ago thank goodness.

Worse than 'should' is 'need' - "You need to .....". This has the effect of trying to change the subjective into the objective. and avoid actually expressing an opinion. I especially hate ascribing needs to inanimate objects - "This table needs to be 6 inches higher". I'm sure that if somebody did an analysis of the occurrence of 'need' in spoken English say 40 years ago and now they would observe a massive increase.

It has long been the role of the older generation to criticize the slang of the youngsters.

Also, the incorrect use of the word literally, as in

"I literally died (laughing)."  No you didn't.

"I literally jumped 10 feet in the air."  No you didn't.
