... other railroaders, wannabe railroaders and never-ever-thought-about-being railroaders.....
If I was having a do-over, I think this is something that I might latch onto: https://www.narcoa.org/newsite/aboutnarcoa.htm
Although we had a motorcar at the Fisheries Research camp in N. MB where I worked as a summer student in the mid-60s [as did BHOers lapsteel and BrianT, I think], I'd never heard of the North American Rail Car Operators Association, until this popped up on my Facebook today:
"The NARCOA Expedition should be tying down at New Liskeard by now. On Monday, September 9th, the group is schedule to depart New Liskeard at 8 am immediately following the safety meeting.
The group will stop for breaks in Englehart, and Swastika. In Matheson the group will stop for lunch. There will be an afternoon break in Porquis Junction, followed with a 5:00 pm arrival (if no delays) in Cochrane where they will tie down for the night.
If you catch the speeders, give them a wave, and please stay safe along railway property."
Thanks for the shout out Owen!
Ya…the old Burro cranes and Fairmont “Speeders” were all gone by the time I hired on with the railroad in 2008. I’ve seen them, junked and laying in piles in old railyards or rotting in forgotten sidings…they’re out there and are cool. I’d love to have one.
It would be fun to buy and restore one, and then use it. But…a guys gotta have time for that. The railroad doesn’t give me time for that kind of stuff. I don’t have time for my wife or children, let alone a speeder car.
You’ve got a pulse Owen…it’s
not too late to get involved. :)

Chuck...I sometimes explore abandoned Coal mines...and have found old electric haulage motors like that before. What kind of mine is the Campbell Red Lake?

Dow, it's a gold mine in northwestern Ontario. I worked there 4 months in 1973. I "pulled chutes", loading ore that came down from the stopes into tram cars. Sort of like in this photo...

Ya Dow, my pulse [and hands, hips and innards] agree with you, but pretty much everything else says ... to borrow one of Eddie Shack's lines ... "Not so fast there Big Boy!" Crawling / ^%$#&? / rolling / ^#*^%$& / skooching / %#@&%$ around under the SurfSide yesterday to remove the axle wasn't all that much fun .... particularly when hindsight tells me I should have done a complete job when I had things apart two or three years ago.
