As often said online, here's something they wrote "that didn't age well":
Gibson has just issued a new line of Mastertones with two piece flange, good quality brass parts, and the old style script Gibson name on the headstock. These show considerable promise of being the best banjos Gibson has made since the war
I guess they wrote that before tube-retaining beads started delaminating, binding started disintegrating, and the nickel plating started going dull.
To be clear: I own a banjo that started out as one of these. It was modified by the time I got it. These maybe didn't fulfill the promise of being Gibson's best post-war banjos, but the upside of that is they're the most affordable way to acquire a genuine Gibson Mastertone. And the ones that didn't experience issues are really good players.
