Isn't that a Renaissance tune? I've played it on mando-family instruments, but not banjo. You make it sound quite lovely on gourd.

The tune seems pretty ubiquitous in the UK, attributed variously. The Irish tend to play it as a polka. "The Session" points to a British comic opera, "The Poor Soldier" from 1783. I scanned the original opera's sheet music (it's a song, "The Rose Tree") and although it is in Bb, it is identical to the modern interpretation.
