My sons recently went to a family wedding weekend held by a lake. The weather was flawless, the guests were happy, and the only hitch was the one that they all came to witness: bride and groom getting married. Among the guests in attendance was their effervescent, spry, Mrs. Jack LaLane, Engerizer Bunny, 90-year-old Grandmother. Granny can no longer walk unaided, but why let a little thing like that spoil your fun? They were all having a good chat when someone noticed their Unstoppable Molly Brown Granny in her two-piece bathing suit scooting her walker to the water's edge. In she dives and off she goes!
Someone says, "You know, it isn't going to look good for us if she drowns." To wit came the reply: "It isn't going to look good for us if we drag her back flailing and screaming and hog tie her to her chair to stop her."
They decided to let her swim her merry way to where she was going which was to the other side of the lake and back (about a mile swim.) Everyone was relieved and at the same time, not in the least surprised - Granny was just being Granny.
John was in high school when he had his first seizure.
Got on medications, and did rather well.
Hardly had any, after that.
Got invited to go scuba diving.
His mom, my wife Irene, told him he could go.
But she spoke to the adults who had invited him, and made it very clear that HE was choosing to go, and IF anything happened, like him having a seizure and dying, they were not allowed to feel that it was THEIR fault.
He did just fine.
Also did fine, over the years, out in a fishing boat alone, or roaming the woods & fields with his gun and dog, during hunting season.
Same thing with Granny.
The biggest factors in life are RANDOM CHANCE, and CHOICES & CONSEQUENCES.
Granny chooses to swim, skydive, drive her own vehicle, play her music at volume ELEVEN and shoot at the officers who respond to the noise complaint... ANYTHING she chooses, that's on her.
If there was a boat available, and somebody wanted to follow her at a respectful distance, to haul her out if she was in trouble, that would be NICE, but unless she has been diagnosed as demented, let the old gal party however she wants.
Being a Senior these days, I prefer no one to tell me what I can and cannot do (within reason). So if you find my lifeless body floating in the lake, or beside the tail of the dragon with my bike 30 feet down an embankment on the side of the road, just consider that I lived my life doing what I loved. Then concentrate on trying to find my life insurance, and good luck with that.
