Curious what other bands and artists you are into.
I am a child of the sixties so grew up on Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, Zeppelin, etc.
My top five bands/artists are..
Bob Dylan
Grateful Dead
King Crimson
Frank Zappa
Yes
It was actually Led Zeppelin that peaked my interest in the sound of the banjo.
Gallows Pole has a banjo in it and it really jumped out at me..

I have heard good ones by the ones you mentioned and Benny goodman--plus countless more--I have always been too much of a rambler to settle down I guess

I've always enjoyed that big band sound of yesteryear. Still have some vinyls (yes, most over 40 years old) that I occasionally listen to.

These days, unless I'm looking for new material, I don't often listen to recorded music-- except for classical music.  And I'm also a child of the sixties.  And I'm a now-retired journeyman performing musician, have played and studied many styles of music, and there's not much I haven't explored.

But my one remaining musical hero is Mississippi John Hurt.

Since Benny Goodman has been mentioned, an interesting aside--  Pete DeLuke, my high school music teacher worked for Goodman.  He said that whenever he got a good reed, Goodman would hear it and say "Let me try that on my stick."  And that would be the last time Pete would see that reed.

Out on my errands today, I was listening to a Sottish lass named Eddi Reader with the Royal Scottish orchestra doing a live concert, mostly songs of Robert Burns...

Rolling Stones for me. Believe it or not, Kieth is the reason I play banjo today. 40 years ago I took the 6th string off my Telecaster, and went to open g tuning. This got me to learning open g chords and scales while learning Stones songs… which got me into blues, then slide, then country blues fingerpicking. 20 years ago, a friend in my jam group got a banjo, but no one could make heads or tails of it. I tried it, and was cranking out stuff within a few minutes… it just clicked immediately. I’m still at it.

I have huge love for an Irish folk ensemble called Lankum! They see it as it is and pull no punches.

Come hither my lads with your tankards of ale, And drink to the present before life should fail Pile each on your platter a mountain of beef, Cos it's eating and drinking what brings us relief So fill up your glass, for life will soon pass, When you're dead you'll ne'er drink to your king nor your lass, Anacreon had a red nose so they say, But what's a red nose if you're happy and gay? God split me I'd rather be red whilst I'm here, Than white as a lily and dead half the year, Come hither my miss and give us a kiss, In Hell there's no innkeepers daughter like this. Young Harry propped up just as straight as he's able, Will soon lose his wig and slip under the table, So fill up your glasses and pass them around, Better under the table than under the ground. So revel and chaff as ye thirstily quaff, Under six feet of dirt it's less easy to laugh, The fiend strike me blue I'm scarce able to walk, And damn if I can't stand upright or talk. Here landlord bid Betty to summon a chair, I'll try home for a while for my wife is not there, So lend us a hand I'm not able to stand, But I'm gay whist I linger on top of the land. credits from Cold Old Fire, released May 25, 2014 Tracks trad. arr. Too soon to be out of bed
Too soon to be back at this bus-queue caper
Or fumbling for change for my picture paper
On a Monday morning

Wrong end of the week for a smile
Wrong end of the day for being civil
There’s many a saint would be a divil
On a Monday morning

Oh where is the weekend now?
Where is the whiskey and beer I tasted?
Gone the same way as the pay I’ve wasted
On a Monday morning

If only the birds were booze
If only the sun was a party giver
If only I could trade in this liver
On a Monday morning

My lover she lies asleep
My lover is warm and her heart is mellow
I'd trade you the world just to share her pillow
On a Monday morning

Too soon to be out of my bed
Too soon to be back at this bus-queue caper
Or fumbling for change for my picture paper
On a Monday morning

Heavenly

Bilhe, I'm not familiar with Lankum, and I suppose it's thread drift, but for whatever reason the words to the first ^^ song reminded me of:

Owen, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like your comic style. That first song is entrenched in Ye Olden honesty. And also it came from the man who gave the world Cthulu!

We always sing, even when were losing
'Cos Dublin's drone is hard enough especially when you're down and you're boozing
We sing the Oul' Triangle and then the Tommy Ryan
'Cos all the world's a jail and we can't remember why

Why we agreed to live and lie in embers of a cold old fire nobody remembers
They hand the ashes back to me down the button factory, we're cattle at the stall

We look for signs that Dublin's heart's still beating,
That concrete and glass and peelers and mass, they haven’t stopped the people from screaming,
Being trapped by all the cameras you're inclined to stay at home,
And forget some songs were written to remind you you weren’t born

Born to live and lie and die in embers of a cold old fire nobody remembers
They hand the ashes back to me down the button factory, we're cattle at the stall

We see the cracks under the foundation,
Smouldering on the faces of the people on the drip of isolation,
We hear the sounds come streaming across the crackling air,
The broken words of swine who would tell us that we were

Born to live and lie and die in embers of a cold old fire nobody remembers
They hand the ashes back to me down the button factory, were cattle at the stall
And when did we agree to live and lie and die in embers of a cold old fire nobody remembers?
They hand the ashes back to me down the button factory, we're cattle at the stall.

I listen to the classic rock station on my car radio and have gotten quite critical in my advanced years. The beat is spot on of course. The bass is almost always interesting (I play bass). The chord choices are Ok. The lead guitars are often amazing but the high screeching and bending gets old fast. The lyrics sound composed at the last moment to fit the tune and are almost meaningless. The singing in the majority of songs is almost unbearable (E.g., Ozzy O). But then the Stones come on and all my petty criticisms evaporate: “This is the way it should be done…” (Gimme Shelter … wow)

Ah, the Irish.  smiley

He'll turn your silver into gold and turn your gold to brass.

He'll turn a boy into a man and a man into an ass.

Hi Bob. John Barleycorn is historically an English/Scottish creation, Ireland hadn't a look in at it. An Irish tune that might echo its sentiments may be the Shane McGogan & The Pogues masterpiece called "A Rainy Night in Soho or maybe not.
