I also think that Jack Hatfield tabbed it in one of his books somewhere...Maybe people could look at Jack's books wherever they can find one, if they are in a hurry to have the tab. Zoom has kept me busier than I ever expected but in time I'll put my tabbed version of "I'm Gonna Sleep" into Tabledit...Jack

I think that this is what you're looking for. This is the way it's tabbed in the Earl Scruggs instruction book.

Hi Wayne,
Where did you get this lick pdf from? Did you get it from the backup instruction part of Earl's book and if you did I don't see that exact lick. I'm not sure where in the book it is since I don't really ever use the book....muchas....Jack p.s. I'll be tabbing it soon as I can because it's really a simple banjo song backup lick used all the time by Earl....

At 1:30 , the “cabin lick” ,, the only place I’ve ever heard Earl hit a clam. Sonny Osborne said early on he was copying Earl obsessively until he heard him flub a note or two,, I asked him on his BHO thread here if it was this one,, he said no it was in Randy Lynn Rag, but I've only noticed a very minor flub in that one, hardly noticeable.

Yes, that's the one, Jack. It's on page 74 of the 2nd edition of Earl's book.
Such a simple break. I'll tab it out soon and post it. Earl uses variations of this backup lick in many of his songs....Jack

Rick,
They all sound the same don't they?
Backup Lick

I cannot open the link to the tab in the vault.
Obliged.

Sure, but Earl does this lick in many ways. Here's my other take on it...Jack
Backup Lick 2

My edition of the Scruggs book has a copyright date of 1968. The tab in my book is in the backup licks section of the book on page 75. It's described as "A catchy lick that can be heard as back-up in "My Cabin In Caroline" and other tunes . . ."

I think Earl really loved this lick in the early days. He seems to have slipped it in wherever he could. If you listen carefully, you can even hear it during Everett Lilly’s mandolin break in “I’m Gonna Settle Down”. I think it demonstrates Earl’s inventiveness and sense of humor. He did go to the wrong fret once in “Cabin” and they decided to use that take. I guess he was only human after all. I think today’s banjo pickers should use it more.

I use wrong frets a lot. Strictly as an artistic choice, of course...
Thanks, everyone, for posting this.
This one that has escaped me for years.
After looking at this tab it started to click.
Recently it occurred to me from watching some of Jim Britton's adds, how effortlessly he moved his hand up and down the neck.
Duh! I should have caught on to that years ago. Keeping his hand in good position, as he moves it so that the strings are close by makes for less wasted movement and staying in the groove. I'm finally figuring out why some others learn so much faster. 30 Years at this and I'm just now learning things I should have learned in the first year or two.
Ha! Here's another backup lick (measure 11 & 21) and stuff from Earl...It never stops....I love it...Jack
Backup Teardrop Rolls etc.
