Greetings.. I found a circa 1915 Farland 12" Concert Grand at an auction. The cap on the back of the rim had fallen off, and someone made a new crude cap. Mine would have been a simple black half round cap. I would like to know how thick the cap is, as I will be making a new one out of ebony. Thanks so much!!
I knew if I hung around here long enough I'd eventually be useful!
There may have been some variation through the years, but mine measures a half-centimeter to the highest point. There's some marquetry work along the center of this one and, depending how I look at it, it seems there is more of a slope toward the interior than a purely symmetrical arch. I've also seen some that look flat across the top with tapered edges, but these could be later repair jobs like the one you're about to undertake.
Enjoy it!
