Newbie needs help with inherited Banjo. 5 string, 19 frets, I think, used, cannot find a serial number. Grover name on string holder. Open back, has a patent date of Oct 6, 1885. The 4 top tighteners look different than 5th string. I will try to attach recent pics
Thanks

Very cool banjo! And interesting… The patent was issued to Albert C. Fairbanks, but it looks more like a Buckbee product. Here is the patent….

Seems to have been made by Luscomb. Others will know a lot more.

Buckbee or possibly Buckbee parts. While we tend to attribute everything that is of "New York School" but otherwise unmarked as a "Buckbee", there is period evidence that MANY people were all basically turning out the same or similar types of banjos. In addition, there are period accounts that Buckbee (or other unnamed factories) were selling partially finished banjos and people were finishing them out or decorating them.

This is like today where many people are all making duplicates of "Gibson" banjos. If one did not know better, they would think that all the Gibson clones were made by one factory-- they all share parts from a few suppliers, they wood is all very similar, and despite the name on the peghead they are pretty much all exactly the same.

Here is a "Silver Gem" that was identified as made by Buckbee. I'm posting only because of the "Silver" in the model name and the fact that the peghead shape of this banjo is very Buckbee-like.

Just curious, how do we know for certain that all of these similar banjos were made 100% by the Buckbee factory?

I could agree with them being partially built by Buckbee, or rather sharing part sources.

This'd banjo is rare and somewhat desirable, you can easily get $500 or more.

I agree with Kyle, $500 is a better value for the banjo! Don't let the grandkids play with unless with supervision.

Kyle,
Thanks for your reply. I am not really wanting to sell at this time. Grandchildren may show interest to play. I will have to learn a few things about care, tuning, etc. Heck I might even try to learn my non-musical self , how to play.
I appreciate your help
