Laurence Diehl You are not a banjo picker. You are an expert musician who plays banjo. Another nice one!

That's a very nice thing to say Lew, I do feel that the instrument is not that important, whatever it takes to put across the feeling of the music.

Great banjo rendition of a masterpiece! Revolver is my favorite Beatles album... I’d like ti do a four string version as I did with here there and everywhere, but in this period I’m not at home and I haven’t my banjo with me...

No banjo? An oversight surely! I think this would translate well to the four string Paolo. Look forward to hearing your version!

Wonderful!

My favorite Beatles song on banjo has to be your arrangement of Here, There and Everywhere.

The band and the songs are two different things.

Maybe you didn't like their performances and recordings. But the songs are some of the greatest popular music compositions of all time.

That's not just my opinion. It's borne out by the numbers of covers and how artists of all levels are still performing their music going on 60 years later. "Yesterday" is one of the most covered songs of all time, with over 2200 known recordings.

There's a chance you like some Beatles songs without knowing they're Beatles songs.

Old Hickory

I just ever liked the Beatles, the people, the music, anything about them. No offense to them, I know they were the rage at one time, but not what I liked or wanted to watch or listen to.

There's always a chance that I might hear one of their songs played in bluegrass style that I'd like, but no in their style.

Thanks Ken, I think with such beautiful melodies job #1 is just not to screw it up!

Played a fair share of Beatles tunes over the years, to be sure. I am never a fan of any one band or artist's entire body of work, the Beatles are no exception, but I like more then the usual amount with them. Just for harmony work alone, especially the early stuff, makes listening worthwhile.

You're not the only one who doesn't like the Beatles , Sherry. My wife doesn't care that much for them either. We all have different tastes.

Got it. Curious: What or whose music do you like (outside of bluegrass and banjo)?

My wife, on the other hand, was in the studio audience for the dress rehearsal of one their appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. She was 11.

As for me: When ABC started airing the show "Hootenanny" in 1963 with weekly folk music concerts on college campuses, I thought "I want to do that." When the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan in February 1964, I thought: "I REALLY want to do THAT." Got my first guitar in April. I had just turned 13.

It was the same for me Ken. The Beatles made playing music somehow attainable, not something "out there" that other people did. Folk music was also my access point. I bought my first guitar at 14, never looked back.

I like old time country (not this new stuff), jazz, blues,  gospel, pop,  some rock-n-roll, some classical, what used to be called the big band sound.  Just about anything except loud, obnoxious noises some call music.

What's notable about this piece - and many of Laurence's other recordings - is his extraordinary gift in transforming and arranging music from various genres, and presenting them on the 5-string banjo, in such exquisitely tasteful and unique ways. Laurence is a master musician. It's a huge gift that Laurence showcases his work on this site, and interacts with BHO members in such an honest and friendly way.
