The good folks at the Calgary Farmers Market have an entry in this year’s Calgary Stampede Parade on July 5. They’ve asked me to play banjo on the back of a 1950’s era pickup with hay bales and Figgy the Piggy , the Market mascot. There are usually 300,000 people along the parade route…. I better go practice….!

The nice thing is that since you are moving along the parade route, you are only playing for a few of the 300,000 at a time, so all you have to do is learn one song, really good. At the end of the day the only person sick and tired of hearing that song will be the guy driving the truck.

Well, I’m putting my life in that truck driver’s hands,, so I’d better practice an extra one - Earl’s Breakdown in case that old pickup dies partway through….. ;-)

Same thing I did, when filling in for a better banjoBluegrass  player, who couldn't make it, and gave them MY name, when their original DIXIELAND banjo player couldn't make it.

And when my GRUMPYSTILTSKYN JUG BAND was invited to MARCH in the Flag Day parade, in Fredonia, we just kept moving, and repeating two songs.

MY lyrics, to the tune of  "Battle Hymn of the Republic".

"It's too hot to be out marching!

It's too hot to be out marching!

It's too hot to be out marching!

Let's go have a beer!!"

and my sister-in-law's lyrics to "Marching To Pretoria"

"Oh, we are marching through Fredonia,

Fredonia, Fredonia,

Oh, we are marching through Fredonia,

  Fredonia,  today!"

Well, it a matter of me getting bored and uninspired if I repeat 2 or 3 tunes. I don’t play well uninspired - I’ve been pounding out 25 tunes busking for 2 years now so I’ll be ok.

Chas,
Years ago I played the same kind of gig for our town's July 4th parade. We had banjo, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and washtub bass -- in overalls and on hay bales -- Hee-Haw style. As latigo1 mentioned, since we were always moving past a new audience, we stuck to just a few songs -- "Mountain Dew" and "Old Joe Clark" were two, as I recall -- and damned if we didn't win "Best in Parade" and even inspired a young student of mine to eventually become a professional musician, singer-songwriter -- Bo Thayer, who now lives in Vermont.
Have fun -- and pray for sun!

Re.:  " ... damned if we didn't win "Best in Parade"

It's onto a tangent, but I'm reminded of the "Best Tractor" trophy my trike [avatar pic] won in a local car/bike/tractor show some years back.  yes

Congrats, Owen. Nice looking trike -- or should that be "tractor?"
Truth be told, there wasn't a whole lot of competition in our small-town parade, but a win is a win, and you take 'em when you get 'em!
And, with apologies to him, the name is Bow Thayer -- a real "rootsy" musical talent. Check him out on Youtube.

So, compelled by curiosity, I looked for a Bow Thayer video.
This one's a slide show, but by gosh, he has a god sound!

And here's him playing an instrument he cobbled together:

Well, at this point, you're one up on me, Mike.

I just got my computing machine back from the shop... new SSD and "cleaned stuff up" ... so far I can't make it produce sound. sad

[But I'm sure my son-in-law, who lives a few blocks over, will be able to wrestle it into submission.  yes ]

Bow sounds somewhat like Fred Eaglesmith. Was he a fan of Fred’s ?

Chuck, make sure to STAY HYDRATED! I played w/ a C&W band and played a July 4th parade gig for over 10 years. One year I forgot to hydrate (sitting in the staging area for hours in almost record heat) and took a header right off the flat bed. Luckily a passerby took the brunt of my weight and the fiddle was OK too. Some nice folks rushed me into their house with the AC cranked and ice packs all over me.

Other years, same as the other posters, we only played 2 or 3 songs over and over, the best ones. Always hit the review stand with what ever country song was on the top of the charts that year.

Good advice, Al. I’ll be taking along lots of water,, but not going to drink too much as to have to relieve myself at a fire hydrant….
Long range forecast looks good.

That's why "they" invented trucker bombs, no?  cheeky  Heck, you could even go one better ... toss signed/autographed ones.  I just checked the fridge and see some of the bottled water comes in 330-355ml. bottles > send more fans home happy than if you used the more typical 500-710 ml. sizes.

[Here in beautiful west-central Man-ee-toe-bah, Calgary's water woes seemingly have been pushed to the back burner.... did Ms Gondek work her magic?  In any event, July 5th. ... what's the rush?!?!]

Don't know about Fred Eaglesmith, Chas, but Bow was friends with and greatly influenced by Levon Helm.
I said Bow was a very young student of mine (guitar), and he was. But all I did was show him the C-chord, and then got out of his way! His banjo style is sui generis.

Last I heard from my balcony was that our fearless mayor is sticking to her July 5 date for normal resumption of water usage,, pipes are being welded in place, other trouble spots are being hastily fixed,,, stampeding tourists will descend on the city in mere days...!

What the?!?!?!?   I seem to recall that typically CBC TV carries the parade, so all week I've been waiting with mucho anticipation.  ...Check my program guide this a.m. and nada, zippo, nothing.  The pressure is really on you now Chuck ... [obviously] it's all riding on your post-parade report and analysis.

But to "ramble" a bit, while "anticipating" ^^ I read somewhere that there are about 100 entries.  I presume they'll be lining them up single-file at the start.  But, but, but, IF zipper merge actually allows more traffic to flow, my logic says that the parade would be shortened IF they scrapped the one-lane-start and went with zipper merge.

As one who doesn't mind thread drift, I might not get around to starting a separate thread.  While I make up my mind, here's how 50 lanes into 4 apparently works (?) in China:

This Is What a 50-Lane Traffic Jam Looks Like | Smithsonian

Chuck, besides the pressure no TV coverage [here] presents, we're counting on you to plant the seed for an upsurge in BG banjo.  wink

YAHOO!!            [And more importantly, Go Yankees, Go!!]

It was on Global Calgary, Owen. But ya didn’t miss nuttin’,, my volume was fine at the staging area, but then during the actual parade we had a 25 man marching band behind us,,, so my one banjo and 40 watt amp might have attracted 10 people along the sidelines. C’est la vie, as dey say ad da Moan-Ray-All Forum.

It’s 11 somewhere…
Thought I’d bring you some highlights, Owen, especially since the Parade Marshall was Owen Crow Shoe…also some vintage tractors, city councilors who ignore my pothole complaints, a tip of the Stetson to our American friends, and of course the guy playing a too-quiet banjo (is there such a thing…?)

Thanks Chuck ... but yer right: it was too quiet .... [it might as well have been me!!*  cheeky ]

Nice truck though, looks very much like the '52 International [model L-110, IIRC] that I owned back '73ish to '81ish.

* = kinda like when I see a MLB batter take a feeble swing and miss badly, or an NBAer throw up an airball, and comment [to no one in particular]: "Heck I can do THAT!!"

Edit: 'Twas to the stampede twice in the early '70s ... I can recall a few things, but watching the parade ain't one of 'em. frown
