I love my set of StewMac slotting saws.So easy to get just the right size and shape in bridges and nuts, but like anything they get dull after a few years.
Especially when used on pearl nuts.I need to go diamond on those,I believe.
Anyway as I was getting ready to order replacements for my most used 4 banjo sizes it occurred to me that I had only dulled the first 2 inches of the blades as I tend to use them on installed nuts and bridges using short strokes.

Anyway,I decided to snap off those 2 inches at the end of those blades which puts them in fresh teeth.
They work like new,again.
I suppose I've added a couple of years to their life...especially if I keep them out of those pearl nuts.

That's an excellent tip, Steve. Thanks for sharing it.

About a year ago i bit the bullet and bought a diamond file . 50 bucks i think i paid ...anyway it is pretty good . After a couple months it started to get dull it seemed . I took a small wire brush to it and it comes back to almost brand new performance but now i have to wire brush it pretty often to keep it cleaned . I can see that the ebony dust now collects in the teeth there for i have to clean it quite often.

I always use a brass brush to clean my files and saws.

Every time I see your file holder Steve, I remember I want to make one and then forget to do it. Every time I use mine I have to lay them out in order and write the gage size on them with a sharpie.

Thanks for another reminder!

Cheers
