When I bought this banjo, I have provenance, even email from Geoff Stelling about it. I attach a photo of the sticker.

The Stelling Banjo Chronology on the web says that the first Starflower was #50 in 1976.

Jens Kruger told me it's possible Deering made or helped with this banjo.

Confused about the discrepancy.

Also it was redone because the lacquer on this batch was bad.

What might it be worth? Thank you.

Hi Nancy to the best of my knowledge Geoff started out working for Deering after leaving the Navy - San Diego in the 1970s. I would be inclined to agree with Jens as I think Jens joined Deering about that same time. I feel sure if I am wrong someone will jump in and correct me.

I would encourage you to do a Google and YouTube search of Stelling and see what the Internet throws at you.

It would be hard to put a valuation on an instrument of that age just from photo's.

I envy you.

A Stelling Banjo Chronology:
Important Instruments and Significant Dates

Compiled by Sherry and Geoff Stelling

Note: Numbers refer to serial numbers of individual instruments.

Year 1974, Serial Nos. 1 - 7
No. 1 - First banjo completed, Bellflower, sold to Bonnie Hasting, Geoff's banjo student, on July 25th. Bonnie returned the banjo to Geoff in 1988.
No. 2 - First Staghorn and first Stelling designed, built for Brian Welchel, also a student. Now owned by Geoff Stelling.
No. 3 - First Whitestar made of walnut.

Year 1975, Serial Nos. 8 - 45
No. 09 - First Golden Cross made of walnut.
No. 12 - Staghorn built for Alan Munde.
No. 13 - First Gospel and first banjo Geoff kept for himself. Now owned by Jimmy Stelling.
No. 14 - First Scrimshaw with inlaid whale, made for employee and former student and Scrimshaw design creator Jon Wegand.
No. 21 - Bellflower built for Hub Nitchie, founder of Banjo Newsletter magazine.
No. 33 - Second Scrimshaw. Features porpoises on resonator.
No. 35 - Whitestar B with a brass tone ring; first instrument distributed by Elderly Instruments.

Year 1976, Serial Nos. 46 - 285
No. 050 - First Starflower.

Interesting that the Stelling website itself says the first Starflower was 1976 (#50), but here we are looking at a Starflower from 1975 (#26).

A fine player here Neil Abercrombie (he's on youtube) played it and loved it. It's in excellent condition. Liked it better than my Earl Scruggs Standard. Setup by Donnie Little.

What KC Jones says. The product label doesn't lie. Perhaps Geoff forgot to record it. Or improperly recorded it. Or when Sherry and Geoff compiled the chronolgy, they simply missed Nancy's #26. Mistakes happen.

I bought a Starflower from 1977 2 years ago here in Germany for 3k, to give you a ballpark.

I'm pretty sure I'm right about this. Greg and Janet Deering worked for Stelling while the company was based in California. When Geoff decided to relocate to Virginia, the Deerings launched their own banjo company.

The Stelling and Deering business relationship ended in the middle of 1978. Geoff moved the shop to Virginia in 1984-1985.

Hi Nancy

Just had a thought. Janet Deering is an active member on the BHO. You should drop her a PM and see if she or Greg can provide some detail
