Here is the 1st rule from the hangout in classifieds:
Listings marked as “For Sale” or “For Sale or Trade” must be given a specific price in $US. If you are flexible on the price and want to let people make offers, simply state that in your listing. Items marked as “For Trade” only do not require a price.
So you see, there is a method for posting where you do not have to state a specific price. Hope that helps.

That means you give a price, but if you're flexible and will consider offers you can state that also. It doesn't negate the need for an actual listed price.
Hope I've clarified that for you, thanks for your time.
What an amazing find Jim..Im almost a bit surprised its advertised here, but thanks for the pictures and video.
If you have to ask about the price...well, you probably cant afford it LOL.
Ive been chasing a local mid 30s Granada for 40 years. I know where it is and the owner and when he's ready to sell, I know what the cost will be.

What a ridiculous statement. Most people that are financially well-off care more about how they spend their money, not less. Collectors of instruments absolutely care about how much they spend on a collectors item.
I've got the cash to spend $50k on a banjo, or a car, or a boat, or a horse, or anything else for that matter, if I wanted. I don't want to, but I absolutely could afford it without even blinking. But that doesn't change the fact that I want to know the price of a product before I buy it.
Fact of the matter, is that these "contact for pricing" listings intentionally violate the rules to circumvent their intended effect. The reason for that rule is obvious: so people can't hide the prices of what they're selling from the general public. And that's also the same reason that these prewars don't have prices shown: because the current owners don't want people to know how much they're going for these days.

Well I disagree.
Anyone in the prewar Gibson flathead market with any knowledge knows approximately what the price of this banjo is going to be..with the refinished reso, replaced non gold flange, etc. Jim Britton has been a great resource for bringing these treasures to the open market where previously they were sold behind the scenes. He says contact him..so if you're really interested, call.

Your agreement or otherwise with regards to the state of the prewar Gibbo market is irrelevant, so let us not get distracted.
The advert is in direct contradiction to the rules of the marketplace.
Could a mod confirm whether or not the rules apply to everyone equally, or if there's a dollar amount where they no longer apply?
Jim -- I will send you a blank check. After you have shipped the banjo, please fill in the check with any amount you choose. Holy cow, that thing sounds great. And I am not one who just thinks anything that says any prewar Gibson is necessarily better than other good banjos. But there is no denying this one.

Ohhhh..now I see..some people don't like that the ad doesn't have a price.
I'll be sure to give Jim the feedback. I won't take up any more of this threads time with irrelevant comments.

No one asked you to get involved in the first place, so you really aren't required to feed anything back. You're not really needed here at all.
You look at any thread that has a Pre War banjo listed and a price listed for it and you will see that the thread is full of posts saying that the seller is asking an outrageous price for it. I don't blame any seller for withholding the price. If anyone is truly interested, they wont mind sending the seller a message asking for a price. Honestly, if I or anyone else wanted to sell a banjo string and priced it for 100.000 dollars, it's nobody's business but theirs. Nobody has to buy it. It may sound silly, but if that's the sellers price, it's none of my business. That being said, Jim has the reputation of being an honest and fair man and I have never heard anyone say one word contrary to that. If I was looking to buy a pre-war banjo, he would be the first guy I would talk to. As far as that banjo, it sounds amazing! I would love to be it's caretaker, but I'll never be able to afford to own an instrument like that! Someone is going to get a fine instrument when they purchase this one!
This is weird, someone with 5 posts chose to burn them on complaining about no price on a 125000 dollar banjo. (Guestimated Based on a Huber recent sale. )
And the call of hypocracy! lol. I bet if you create an ad for 1 dollar, the owner wont bother you either...because hes a nice level, headed guy. Now dont get in your car and go 56 in a 55 on your way to whatever tomorrow unless your willing to turn yourself in.

You know, you can Google the word "hypocracy" if you don't know what it means :)
Wonderful banjo and highly credible seller. He will benefit from this thread, as he hopes.
Unfortunately, the Hangout has become a reflection of today's culture of people looking to get their feelings offended and others wanting to be rule enforcers. If it promotes banjos, love it, and if not, click on something else, but stop whining!
Here’s some video of this banjo in G.
