Hello,
I made some photo’s of a Gibson TB1 from, if I checked correct is from 1932. As a tenor, it is not quit interesting, because it needs a refret, and the tenor-market in Europa has collapsed. Perhaps anyone in the US can tell me something about the potential value as a 5 string conversion?
I am a bit confused about the “ Mastertone” inlay, as I cannot find TB-1 from this period with this inlay.

I am helping the widow of my deceased colleague banjo player Wouter Cleypool to sell it.
Any comments will be appreciated. Hope my attachments are visible…

Possibly a conversion with the installation of the Mastertone style tonering, since a typical TB-1 would not have. The neck could have been changed out at the time of conversion . Does the Gibson label have the word Mastertone on it?

there should be a decal in there that says Gibson.

the number looks correct, but it would not have been gold plated or had a tone ring. So either its been replated or added new hardware. Can you post more pictures shoing the entire banjo? the neck looks like a style one from the bit i can see.

I agree with what's said above.

The golden decal inside the rim will tell what it was originally. If its a smallish oval that says only "Gibson", without the long MASTERTONE guarantee language, then it was made as a TB 1 and somebody has added a (nice) tone ring. If your tone ring has only 4 holes spaced around it, then it is a 1950s/60s Gibson arch top tone ring. If it has NO holes drilled in it, it "might" be a pre-war "no hole" arch top Gibson ring.

In the US this would be a candidate for "double conversion" (5 string neck AND a flat head tone ring) due to the inherent value of the good rim and the one piece flange. Whether it was a style 1 or some mutant factory Mastertone. It's dollar value is in that rim and flange, maybe worth $1000 in the US. Maybe more...

Check out this one in the BHO Classifieds to see what a TB 1 golden decal looks like:  https://www.banjohangout.org/classified/104857

Thanks so far!! It will take 2 weeks before I can post more.

As far as can see on the pics I took, there ar no holes in the tonering, and the label only says "Gibson", no "Mastertone". And it looks like it has been replated.

I will come back on this, thanks for the great info.

Spann's Guide lists this as a batch of TB-1s from 1931. As mentioned above, it should not have a tone ring, Mastertone block or gold plating,

Take some photos when you can showing the underside of the flange where it meets the neck. We can determine if that has been replaced or plated gold that way. I think where looking at a conversion banjo. The rim and resonator are likely real Gibson, it's been cut for a tone ring and likely a new neck added or atleast a mastertone inlay. We'll be able to provide more with more pictures. I have a tv-1 conversion and love it!

In a short while, I'll drop by and we'll have a good look.

Having my 37 RB-1 at hand for reference....

I'll make sure this story ends well.
