That's the title of an interesting article about Jerry Garcia in today's New York Times

Unfortunately, it's behind a paywall. If you don't subscribe to the Times, you may still be able to read the article. Many public libraries provide on-line newspaper access to their patrons.

Thks Joe but couldn't access it w/o being snared ?
I'm not much of a rock fan & pretty much associated Jerry w/ that & the few times I listened to him try to play BG mandolin I thought his playing was sloppy , nothing to do w/ the music , but just sloppy . I'm sure I'll get some flack on that but that's my 2 cents .

Jerry's banjo playing is underrated. There's a video on YouTube that features a lesson tape he made for one of his students. It's worth listening to in its entirety.

can't comment on Bob's assessment of Jerry's mando playing cuz i never heard him play mando.....but i agree with John....Jerry had a great feel for the banjo, and it was good enough for Vassar Clements to play fiddle to.....so that's saying a LOT!

This is an interesting article. I have a subscription, so here's a shared gift link to the article to get around the pay wall (I think the link will expire in 30 days).

I watched a documentary series on the Grateful Dead recently. I wasn't a close follower back in the day, so it surprised me to see how devoted and  intent Jerry Garcia was on developing his musical skills. Seems like he practiced all the time. He even played the pedal steel guitar on CSNY's "Teach Your Children." So here's a hat tip from me to the memory of Garcia and his fans. He was quite a musician.

I have seen and heard a lot of his playing, but never have seen or heard him play mandolin. He played banjo in a couple bluegrass bands, Old and in the Way was the most successful, with David Grisman playing mandolin in that band.  Garcia and Grisman played together as a duo for a while, with Garcia on Guitar and Grisman on mandolin.  Grateful Dead tunes that have a mandolin (“Ripple” comes to mind) was usually Grisman in studio and played sans mandolin live.

I have a CD of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band w/ David Grisman Live (somewhere).
They play the fine old stuff -- trad. country and blues, Rodgers, Cotten, Hurt, jug band, some B.G., and, of course "Ripple."
A fantastic collection -- every song in the pocket.
I never was a fan of the Dead, but this aggregation is superlative!
As Joe Bob Briggs always said, "Check it out."
