About a month ago I came in possession of the incredibly elusive original B&D No6 NPU 5 string banjo. Yes, the same one from the YouTube video that’s been up for nearly a decade.

No, the banjo is not and never will be for sale, for any price.

Yes, it has steel strings on it because it was made to accommodate both. 5 string steel string sets were sold by the Bacon Banjo Company so the theory of ‘gut strings only’ has been debunked many, many times. These banjos sound incredible for all genres and since only 6 of them were ever made, with only 3 remaining and now all being in California, I am very fortunate to own this banjo.

I have saved this banjo from its sure demise of ending up in any museum, which is where banjos go to die.

Enjoy the photos!

Is that the famous elephant head carved heel? I saw a 4 string No 6 once with the elephant and it had "ivory" tusks!!!! Or is this a rhino head?

How beautiful. Good for you!

No9's came with an elephant.

No6's have a Lion. But all pre 1931 have Ivory inlays

WOW, that banjo is a work of art. I am glad you want to keep it and hope it is to play. The details of it are amazing and beautiful. You are a very lucky person. I saw it for sale but it was out of my price range.

This one was never offered for sale publicly. It was offered to Noam Pikelny first but he was unable to come up with the funds, so it was offered to me second.

There is a fake No6 tenor for sale on the classifieds here, but it's not legit and it's not an original 5 string.

Unfortunately, yes.

So many things are wrong with it.

anyone who knows NPUs would have paid the original $8500 asking price and been glad to do so because even the regular tenor goes for upwards of $15k... but this one is a $2500 banjo at most because it's pretend.

Hi Juggernaut - Could you elaborate on what makes you think the one in the classifieds now is a "fake"? I asked for more photos and the rim and dowel stick numbers line up. I'm wondering from a closeup of the photos if there may be a repaired heel crack, though, which to me is of concern.

Thank you.

The lion carving is most certainly broken and repaired.
