It came down to two banjos the Sullivan V35 and the Hopkins Archtop.
I bought the Archtop because there are soooo many flat tops, Also more Sullivan V35's around
looking for new homes. Plus the Hopkins was new. I'll have more chances to buy a Sullivan.
I just didn't want the Gold Tone Archtop.

Now what story do I tell my husband when it arrives?

Well, that's simple. "Honey, it followed me home, can I keep it? Poor little orphan banjo...."

If that's the one you bought, it's a great sounding banjo. All strings are balanced, nice tone.

Nice sounding banjo. Full bodied tone, more than most archtops that I hear locally.
I'm sure you know how to handle a husband! We are pretty simple creatures.

My wife usually says, " Honey, I got this on sale, look at how much I saved! "...   :-)

Well the nice thing about the archtop is that to me, you can do some things to it to get a more flathead sound if you want . Trying to get a flathead to sound more like an archtop doesnt seem to go as well. That video makes me think that that archtop was tweaked to get more of a flathead sound. Lightgauge sorta alluded to that.As for the husband, if he starts getting mad, just start crying. Works for MY wife! LOL

How about telling him the truth: "Dear, I just bought a banjo and I'm so excited and just can't wait until it gets here."

It's simple. Most ladies have closets full of shoes they never wear...you could be that lady instead.

..."50% of women own over 10 pairs and 13% of women have more than 30 pairs but only 39% consider themselves as a “shoe person.” Every 1 out of 12 women owns 100 or over than a hundred pairs of shoes. On average, women purchase about 3 pairs per year and spend $49 per pair."

A banjo that gives you pleasure is far more useful than shoes. Happy Wife, Happy Life!

My wife loves me to have these jo's that make me smile. Never do I have an argument from her.

You're welcome.

My husband and I were laughing at the the "how should I tell him suggestions"
When presented with the shoe analogy, we both realised I hadn't bought myself anything in over a year, so I was due. lol

I keep watching the video of it. At some point I'll need to buy the flat top.
Then my arsenal will be complete, an archtop and a flat top.

And... at my age they should last me my lifetime.

Sounds like a really cool flat-top for now, at least on this recording. Wait until your hubbie gets used to you/your playing before unveiling/revealing its birth-rite arch-top tonal capabilities & qualities smiley

It sure looks like an awesome joe!

I have a Sullivan Greenbriar Archtop. Love it! A little louder and great tone to my ear. Tell him it’s cheaper than flying lessons!
Congratulations!
