Just getting ready to mount a Gold tone neck onto an old spunover pot and wondered what size is optimal for the dowel hole in the heel.
I’m guessing 1/2” or 5/8”?
Neither my friend helping me nor myself has ever mounted a dowel stick before. I think he’s got a handle on setting the angle and the heel cut

3/4" is the vintage Vega and Fairbanks standard. 1/2" is definitely too small.

Thanks Bob,I wasn’t clear. The stick is 3/4” but it’s the dowel size I need. There’s 5/8” there which looks about right next to the 1/2”.
How long should that dowel protrude into the heel?

He’s got a step drill for 1/2” but not for 5/8”. Might have to get one before we drill.

3/4" is ideal but 5/8" will work. I use 5/8" simply because my drill won't handle anything bigger when drilling maple.
The tenon should go into the neck about 1 1/2". Less than an inch would be unstable.

Get a 5/8" forstner bit. It will make a clean hole and  be a little easier to line up.

The crystal ball at Remo predicts I will have 10-1/2" medium crown frosted top heads in early July.
