I just purchased a Fender Artist, ca.1970s, and it has an engraved flange. I've done some pretty extensive searching but I haven't found another example like this one. It is chrome-plated like a standard Artist. I believe the engraving is Concert Tone style. Has anyone heard of another Artist with engraved flange? Also included with the banjo was the original warranty card and setup pamphlet. Interestingly, the warranty card has the name "Cathy C" handwritten on the inside. Is it possible this is the "Cathy" Scott Zimmerman refers to as working for Fender during the banjo production years?

I have noticed that Fender, like Gibson, did not always adhere to factory specs. My experience with Fender is mostly with guitars but they tend to run all over the place with appointments. Their banjos may have been more consistent than their guitars but, even so, they could have done some experimenting to see how things worked.
Fender certainly didn't stick strictly to factory specs on their steel guitars. It's not too big a leap to think they did the same with banjos.

Is Scott Zimmerman a BHO member? If so, he can be reached.

He is on the Concert Tone thread below this one.

I've seen photos -- here in fact -- of Artist models with Concert Tone inlay. So it would not surprise me if an Artist or two had an engraved Concert Tone flange -- either by special order, replacement, or some other reason. It's always possible a previous owner obtained the flange and swapped it for the plain original. Are you sure it's Concert Tone style engraving?

If we page Scott Zimmerman - desert rose - maybe he'll drop by here, too.

Pease post some pictures.

I've seen a few Artists with Concert Tone fretboards over the years but have never seen one with a Concert Tone Custom engraved flange. Not saying they neer did one, however.

Here are some Concert Tone Custom pics from the 1968 Fender Banjos Catalog.

That is definitely a chrome plated version of the Concert Tone Custom flange.

One can only speculate that this was one of many Fender "floor sweeps" over the years. An order comes in—a banjo needs to be shipped and it gets built with what is on the shelf.

Sometimes, Fender created new models from leftover parts — the Marauder (built from surplus Bass V bodies), Custom (6 string version of the VII), early '68 Telecaster Bass (leftover early '50s Precision bodies—I owned one) and a few others come to mind. The T-Bass is the only one I can think of that went back into production after The First Edition with some guy named Kenny Rogers started playing a '54 or '55 Precision.

Thanks for the reply Mike! I'm not a Fender expert, but I have never seen another example of an Artist with an engraved flange. If there any other examples out there, I would love to see them!

Me, too.

If you don't have a scan of that catalog, send me a message and I'll attach one by return email.

I just noticed a typo in an earlier post. The Custom was a 6 stringed version of the Fender XII electric 12 string. I wanted one.
