Just canceled a banjo sale to Spain after reading how much personal info Escrow . com is requiring . Too much trouble and risk of identity theft. Thoughts ?

I’ve never done a transaction on escrow.com… but i suspect the thorough vetting of detailed information provided by both parties is what makes it “safe”.

With regard to identity theft… sites that process and retain this sort of data *should* have a number of controls in place to govern how data is stored and used — SOC Type 2 certifications/audits and such…

When all of this is in good order, you’re generally safe. But of course it just takes one oversight or poor decision to cause a data breach… As someone in the “field”, it’s a constant battle for sure, but such is the world we live in.

Escrow.com is legit but quite expensive imo.

Yes it could be legit but in this day and age better safe than sorry . I have sold and sent banjos to other countries before with some success and lost one for about 3 weeks once but payment was much easier. Can’t remember how we transferred the funds . Did it all myself shipping packing , all the paper work. Anyway I’ll just sell in the US

How would they provide their service of transactional security without collecting detailed identifying information from both parties?

I once tried to buy a banjo through the BHO, where the seller only wanted to use escrow.com. I started the process and my bank absolutely begged me not to go through with it because it just seemed borderline sketchy. I did a little digging myself and agreed. I backed out of the purchase. I felt a little bad for the seller. He struck me a just a regular joe who wanted to sell a banjo, but everything about escrow.com just didn't pass the smell test.

I've just used PayPal to Spain. No problems.
