I'm not a smoker, but I have observed others smoking on countless occasions. I have witnessed one person after another asking a fellow smoker, "Can I bum a smoke?" and without fail, the other person produces the requested item and hands it over. The answer is always yes, even when I know the two in question despise each other. People will share a smoke with their mortal enemy, because they understand the need.

I've been to concerts and festivals; if a musician breaks a string, dozens of cases will spring open and a replacement string is handed over. People understand the needs of others.

I'm a plant person. I have given other plant people countless starts, clippings, root cuttings, seeds, you name it. I have been particularly generous with one woman. Among other plants, I have given her numerous banana "pups" over the years. This winter a sudden, hard freeze killed my mother plants. The nursery where I had bought the original plant closed. I don't have a car.

This woman comes to me. She always brings her plants indoors, while I leave mine outside in the ground. She says to me, she's lost one of the plants I had given her and was hoping I'd give her some more. I explain, mine had died in the freeze. Any other plant person would have said, "Oh, will, take one of mine."

She says, "Oh, I know where you can buy one. It's only an hour drive from here..." Really? Only an hour? She knows I don't have a car. Does she expect me to hitchhike? She further explains, "I'd give you one, but then I'd only have six left."

Now, I know she's selfish, I've known that for years. Her selfishness is a frequent topic of discussion in and among our peers - and yet still, it boggles my mind. It is in her best interest to give me a plant. I have demonstrated over and over my willingness to share plants with her. She knows I'd pay her back in kind, and yet, she can't do it.

So, Buddy, can you spare a banana pup?

I will gladly accept digital images.

Ha. That's saying it lightly. I get your point but it was funny just reading it. I like to be more discreet and compare them to a certain vacuum cleaner...well ain't you just a Hoover.. what do you mean I'm a Hoover. They'll get it eventually.

Plant person here, as well. I don't have a banana pup, but I'll send you a "grrr, that is definitely wrong! "

What's funny about this many, many, years ago when I used to smoke I was in a contentious court battle with my ex. I wish I had found her lawyer first cuz this guy was kicking my lawyer's ass. My attorney wanted a smoke break so I went outside with him. He was a menthol guy (yuck) but my ex's attorney was out there smoking Camels. I bummed one off him!

I was in the middle of a HUGE home improvement store (Menards) when a guy approached and asked me for a cigarette. Told him I don't smoke. But the audacity to ask in a place where he couldn't even smoke it is what got me.

Call her up, thank her for telling you where you can buy one, and ask if she'd like to go with you to pick one up.
In HER car, since you haven't got one, and she's your friend.

Then there's the tale of two stingy old men. One asks for a cigarette and the other hands him one. Then the first one says, "I don't have a match." The second says, as he snatches back the smoke, "Then you don't need the cigarette!"

Onto a tangent, but as often as not, when I hear "Brother/Buddy, Can You ... etc." the first thing that pops into my mind is this:

When asked for a cig, I hook the front of my t shirt and pull it down to show a long red line where they put in a new valve and bypass and say, I quit.

Actually, I did try that, but, you know, she's busy.

Update:

The other day, I'm putting out a set new products. I make tags and am shocked by the ultra-low prices. I go to the price change room and the gal looks it up and yes-in-deedy, they came in at ultra-low clearance prices. I buy ALL of them. I take home what I need and I leave the rest in a basket in the back with a note, and I also told folks to help themselves. Later, after all of the items are gone, my banana pup lady came by and asked, "Why didn't you save any for me? I would have liked one." Oh, gee. Sorry. I actually took home more than I need and could bring one or two back, except, gosh, that would require a little effort on my part.

Sounds good. Tit for tat.

I wouldn't ever give her anything again, but that's just me.
