Maybe 5-6 years ago I bought a (new?) Cherry red rk 85. I was told that it was a prototype and it wasn't considered new because it was at a show. There was a picture of Greg Rich holding one on BHO and I was told it was one in the same banjo that I had. It was shipped to a local music store from California.

My questions....

I know the rk85 was discontinued but the rk75 and rk76 are still(?) being made. What is the difference ?
Is it just the type of wood ? My 85 is flamed maple with the cherry red finish as opposed to mahogany or whatever the other is made of.

Was there really only 25 made or was that just a rumor ?

Yep, just the wood. 85's were figured Maple, 75 and 76's are Mahogany. Not sure how many were made. I've had two of the Vintage Amber ones. Beautiful banjos.

Even though the Recording King banjos page no longer shows the discontinued RK-85,  the model's own product page still exists. Google can still find it. You can see that it's the same banjo as the mahogany Elite, except in maple. But that's already been said. Twice.

I own one to bought it used from elderly last year. Love the banjo but need a new one piece flange mine is cracked in one spot and the nickel plating is bubbling.

Cant remember the model name/number but what was the slightly longer scale [27 inch?] RK called?

I got a used neck off Greg years ago and built up a parts banjo with it - still have the banjo and its great.
