The April 2024 issue of Downbeat magazine features a cover story on Bela Fleck.

The article pertains mostly to Fleck's epic undertaking of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" on banjo. The story also includes many other interesting tidbits and insights into Bela's career and persona along the way.

Our local library carries the print version of the magazine, where I was able read the article. The Downbeat website shows the cover, though the article itself does not appear to be available online...

Worth the read if you can get hold of it!

I saw Bela and Abigail (and the kids) here at the Gtand Theatre on the fifth. He played "Rhapsody in Blue", among many other things. Great concert. Not Bluegrass, but well worth being there. He shows the potential for banjo repertoire.

Here's a live video of the Gershwin rendition:

Personally I don't think it's at all flattering to the strengths and character of the banjo, but there are a number of comments there by people who seem to think it miraculously sounds like "a whole orchestra," so . . . horses for courses, I guess.
