I have my BAS under control, but I love to look & listen. Still new to the game but I find myself liking a Yates whenever I hear one online, I have heard a number of adjectives used to describe a particular banjo makers sound and am curious as to what tonal qualities would you use to describe the "Yates sound"?

I would say they have "bottom." Bottom means a depth of tone that makes you sound like you're playing notes instead of overtones. It's a solid sound.

If I was in the market for a new banjo, instead of making my own, Yates would be my first choice.

The lack of overtones leaves a more pure sound to my ear.

A few years ago I was looking online at a used Skillet Head at Morgan Music. From a photo it looked like it had a blemish on the resonator. I got on BHO and asked if anyone had seen and played the banjo in person and what they thought. Robby Boone responded that he had seen and played it, there were no blemishes and the tone was as "dry as a grass hopper's cough" (I may have misremembered the creature). I took this to mean the lack of over tones as mentioned above. Robby was of course right on and I still have it. Love the tone. the feel of the neck and the aged look. Yates and Huber are my favorites.

They are great. All the ones I've ever heard in person online and in person have been incredible. I'm selling one if you need a temptation...  winkwink
