Do Kavanjo pickups work equally well regardless of string spacing (normal vs. Crowe). I would think different spacings would affect how the magnets line up with the strings. Second, does bridge height affect the pickup?

Head tightness, too. I've done a couple of these. Lack of feedback was enjoyable as I increased the volume to neighborhood levels.
Road warriors or touring musicians are not that happy with the mixable sound.
No adjustments means we end up going to different bridges that are also non-adjustable.

The difference between the standard and Crowe spacing is only 1/16" overall at the bridge which makes the difference even less over the pickup. So, the answer to your first question is No.

Because it is a magnetic pickup, you do not want to use a bronze wrapped string for the 4th. Wraps in order of magnetic strength from low to high: Nickel, Stainless steel, Nickel plated steel. As SS wound 4th sets are quite common, I'd start there.

Bridge height can make a difference as can the tightness of the head.

Like Helix, I am also a dealer. I do not resell the Kavanjo pickup unless I am installing it onto your banjo as it comes pre-mounted in the head of your choice.

For an excellent DIY mag pickup, I can't recommend the EMG strongly enough—same advice about magnetic strings applies.
