Here's a fun tune by John Hartford I paper tabbed way back in the 80s. I've seen this tabbed out in all sorts of keys but I think, knowing John as I did over the years, he'd prefer a Low C, or sometimes a low E tuning. He had his necks made to different lengths to accommodate his Baritone Voice.

John came to visit me in NYC many years ago with a new song called Gentle On My Mind and told me that Chet Atkins said it would be a world hit. I replied, "oh I love the tune John but a world hit?"

Well he teased me and my wife Ellen at shows for years and would ask me if I was picking any hits lately. I said "uh, no, I gave that up" Ha. John was a fantastic man to know and be with. He had so much talent. But today, we're doing his version of Gum Tree Canoe....Jack

Wonderful song. A Hartford classic. And your story adds so much more.

Thanks, Jack, wonderful song and tab. Speaking of Hartford stories, I got to work with John at a couple of festivals in California in the mid 80's. One time I was MCing the Live Oak Festival near Santa Barbera. Before I introduced John, he asked if he could say a few words first. He then told the audience what a wonderful MC i was and generally blew smoke up my...banjo. When he was done I walked over and handed him a $5 bill, got a laugh from the audience, then returned to my mic and introduced him. After the set I saw him back stage, thanked him for the intro, and waited for him to return the $5. When he didn't, I said, "You're not returning the cash?" John slowly shook his head and tipped his bowler hat. Best $5 I ever spent. Sure miss him.
