Recently acquired an OME triple X 1969 (?). It needs a new head. It has a silverspun tonering.
Closest I can measure is 10 7/8 inch. Is there such a thing as heads in this dimension? Or do I use an 11 inch?
Second question. I play mostly old style 2 or 3 finger style without picks. Mostly solo. I prefer a sound a bit mellow. Volume is not a problem.
Is an amber head a good choice, or would it be too muted?

Yes, indeed.

Remo makes heads from 10 to 12-1/8 inches diameter, in 1/16-inch increments.

Hangout member Bob Smakula -- Smakula Fretted Instruments -- is a great source for heads at very competitive prices and very low shipping cost.

I'll leave it to him and others to answer your question about the best head for the sound you're after.

Hi, congrats, great banjo! It's an 11" head. I agree, Smakula Fretted Instruments has the best descriptions of the various heads tones and a full selection. OME started a little later...here's their history and many of their catalogs: omebanjos.com/about/history-part-1/

I agree with Mark. I had a triple X and it was 11".

I've found some of Chuck's 1970s silver bell tonering banjos to be smaller than 11" - 10 15/16"...Chuck didn't start Ome until 1971 so 1969 would be in his 5 year non-compete with Baldwin...Would love to see pics though!
