I just completed another cigar box banjo and amp this past weekend.

Holy cow, that's incredibly cool! Did you also make the amp? Looking at the back of the neck, I see what looks like a veneer line, is that an additional layer to the neck? If so, I like the possibilities that adding a horizontal veneer like for strength as well as decoration opens up. Really nice work, inspiring!

I took the guts out of a small amp, with a 3" speaker, that I got off of eBay. I had a 6" speaker that a coworker gave to me many years ago. He brought me 2 that came out of an old TV that they had discarded. The speaker grill is a fan guard. I mounted and rewired it all inside the biggest cigar box that I had, one that would accommodate the larger speaker. As of now, this is the biggest cigar box amp that I have constructed.

The design on the back of the neck was made by sanding a portion of the neck away with a horizontal drum sander (Shop Smith). I then glued a piece of mahogany veneer to the flattened surface, with a piece of scrap wood saved from another neck build, glued to the top of the veneer. Then the neck was shaped with a knife and a wood rasp.

I am amazed by the unusual good, sweet and bright sound it has, and the sustain is also surprising for a cigar box instrument, so my question is, if you have a special bracing inside the box, because it sounds like an instrument that really has been optimized and cared for the tone too. Or have you just been lucky with that cigarbox? Steen

The box has no special bracing. The neck runs all the way through the box, but a quarter inch of space is left in the top side of the neck so that it doesn't touch the bottom of the inside top, except for three quarters of an inch on each end of the mounted neck.

I normally tune them to C, but didn't realize that it was tuned to C#. I should have checked it with a tuner!
