wanted to say hello, thanks for all the good posts and hints, they have really been helpful
slight run down, I'm 58 , no music experience ever, picked up a deering good time 2
a couple of months ago, have been trying to practice an hour to hour and a half a day
breaking it up in two or three segments
I thought this would be difficult, and have been proving myself right HA HA

grabbed another banjo off marketplace, it is a deering vega bluegrass that was made in 2010, sounds good, much better hardware than the good time 2 , neck is shaped smaller and seems easier to play. very loud and powerful sound

if anyone has experience with the vega bluegrass let me know
seems they discontinued it, can't find much info on why they did that or what the replacement for it would be

funny story for me, I have two rat terriers, small dogs, 7 and 14 lbs, they always bark at the tv when they see another dog, they are crazy, and every time they bark, the sound waves cause the vega banjo to hum and ring. and I think they are playing better than me

Deering made two of their Vega banjos in bluegrass models, the Bluegrass Wonder and the Senator. Lack of sales probably led to their being discontinued but that does not mean they weren't fine banjos. Either one is a huge step up from the Goodtime series.

I had the opportunity to play a Bluegrass Senator. It was a fine-sounding banjo that was considerably lighter than a Mastertone design. If I didn't enjoy making my own banjos I might have bought it.

Welcome to the Hangout. Hopefully, we can answer any questions you post and if we don't know the answer, we'll try to find it. We're mostly a friendly bunch with a few old soreheads.

Welcome. It's been said before, that having a fine banjo will encourage you to practice more/stick with it through the challenging bits.

Welcome to the Hangout. You're right in the middle of Bluegrass country. Home of J.D. Crowe R.I.P. one of the best Bluegrass banjo players ever.

How are you going about learning?

Sounds like your all over it with practice and developing muscle memory.

I purchased the scruggs book, some tabs and books from JIm panky's website

been looking at a lot of u tube,

had to go back to the book a few days ago, was starting to get ahead of myself learning songs

which is fun but I think I wa missing out on a lot of other stuff in the process

no one around here offers lessons, so it looks like I am on my own

Sounds like you're on the right track. Have you tried finding a teacher through the "learn" feature on the left side of the BHO page? Just don't attempt anything that's way past your current capabilities & you'll be alright.

Don't know if you've checked the reviews here (under the "more" tab on the left), but here is a review of the Vega

Welcome. I guess I could be described as one of the "Old Sorehead's" Texasbanjo  Sherry mentions above. I am here to help if I can.
