He’s not only a great player, but Ballard makes the banjos he plays. He’s posted a fair numbr of tunes to YouTube; all are worth the watching.

Smooth! Love that banjo, too.

But, I wish we could see what's on that sweatshirt.

Thanks for posting.

I have a copper plate semi fretless neck that Leon made for me to fit to a vintage pot as part of a project to exactly replicate Tommy Jarrell's semi fretless banjo. Leon's workmanship is impeccable and he builds fine banjos. In my opinion he doesn't get anywhere near the credit or attention he deserves. Maybe until now...and some folks are waking up? wink

This is the video source of Tommy Jarrell playing his semi-fretless banjo that we had to work on. Leon did a fabulous job.

The finished banjo; Leon Ballard neck, vintage pot. My aesthetic decision to have black tuner buttons instead of white, and lose the white purfling of the original. But from a playing and tone perspective about as darn close as it's possible to get to Tommy Jarrell's original copper plate fretless.

Here's another view of Tommy Jarrell's original banjo:

The banjo TJ is playing is not semi-fretless. Semi-fretless infers that there are frets starting above the 5th somewhere.

Mr Ballards playing and banjos are awesome. He is in the UK, otherwise I'd own one.

My typo. Tommy Jarrell's original banjo that Leon replicated the neck, as you can see, is fretless with a semi copper plate at frets 1-7.
